The naval base under the name Norfolk became the main naval base of the Atlantic fleet of the American Naval Forces long ago. It represents the largest naval base in the world – as of 2011 seventy five ships, among which five aircraft carriers were based here. There is this base in the southeast of bay Hampton-Rhodes, about exit from Chesapeake Bay in waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The water area of base is located in zone for which the second operating fleet is responsible. At the disposal of base there are ten moorings which total length makes about twenty kilometers, and depth – to 14 meters, oil storage, warehouses of ammunition and cargo-loading equipment. Here staffs of the Supreme command of the American armed forces in zone of Atlantic, and also staff of the commander-in-chief of the Atlantic fleet and some naval educational institutions are located. Five aircraft carriers, and also four landing ships have been moored to moorings of base before Christmas this year. Aircraft carriers Dwight Eisenhower (CVN 69), George Bush (CVN 77), the Enterprise (CVN 65), Harry Truman (CVN 75) and Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) are in port on naval base Norfolk, the State of Virginia, the largest naval base in the world.
