The naval base under the name Norfolk became the main naval base of the Atlantic fleet of the American Naval Forces long ago. It represents the largest naval base in the world – as of 2011 seventy five ships, among which five aircraft carriers were based here. There is this base in the southeast of bay Hampton-Rhodes, about exit from Chesapeake Bay in waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The water area of base is located in zone for which the second operating fleet is responsible. At the disposal of base there are ten moorings which total length makes about twenty kilometers, and depth – to 14 meters, oil storage, warehouses of ammunition and cargo-loading equipment. Here staffs of the Supreme command of the American armed forces in zone of Atlantic, and also staff of the commander-in-chief of the Atlantic fleet and some naval educational institutions are located. Five aircraft carriers, and also four landing ships have been moored to moorings of base before Christmas this year. Aircraft carriers Dwight Eisenhower (CVN 69), George Bush (CVN 77), the Enterprise (CVN 65), Harry Truman (CVN 75) and Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) are in port on naval base Norfolk, the State of Virginia, the largest naval base in the world.

The city of Norfolk - was founded in 1682. In Norfolk in years of War, difficult for the country, for independence the main headquarters of the British governor was located. It happened so that further Norfolk has been almost completely burned by insurgents. The remained church reminds of the times of troubles of colonial wars and conflicts in the city only by miracle. Though its walls everything have been shot by gun kernels. A number of factors has limited development of Norfolk up to the seventieth years of the nineteenth century. So, at that time there was a number of restrictions on any trade with England. You should not forget and about rigid rivalry with other ports of these lands and quite frequent fires which happened nearly every month. But the situation has cardinally changed how in the city some strategically important railway lines and the directions have been connected. At the time of two world wars in the city of Norfolk construction of industrial and transport complex huge for those times prospered. This important object intended mainly for service of needs of the Atlantic fleet of the USA.

After on the main cemetery of the city the general Douglas Makartur has been buried, the legendary Memorial of Makartur has been open here. The American naval base located in this district with the name "Norfolk" of the same name became the main naval base of the Atlantic fleet of Naval Forces of the USA for a long time. Besides, it is the largest naval base around the world. So, as of 2011 seventy five combat ships among which five huge aircraft carriers serve were based here. This well-known base in southeast part of bay Hampton-Rhodes is located. Directly about the exit from Chesapeake Bay in immense waters of the Atlantic Ocean. And the water area of this base is located in zone of responsibility of the second operating fleet of the USA. At the moment at the disposal of naval base there are ten moorings. Their total length makes about twenty kilometers, and average depth about fourteen meters. Here warehouses of ammunition, oil storages and cargo-loading equipment are located. On base there are general staffs of the Supreme command of armed forces of the USA in zone of the Atlantic Ocean. Also here the staff of the commander-in-chief of all Atlantic fleet and set of naval higher educational institutions is located. And in close proximity to base, in the neighborhood of the city of Norfolk eight shipbuilding and ship-repair yards have been built. Their order includes three floating and seven drydocks, and also there are sixteen slips.
